Project R was initiated in New York City on June 12, 2006 by a man named Johnny Tek and several friends who were willing to help out in his mission to save Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game from inevitable decline. Now Project R has grown to thousands of supporters across North America and beyond. In order to complete the objectives of Project R, a new tournament format and new ways to play Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game will be introduced to the public. The new format will be the closest recreation ever made of Kazuki Takahashi’s game as presented in his stories, stories that attracted many of the fans and players to the game in the first place. (The current format used worldwide is nowhere near this goal, encouraging players to copy the same cards in their Decks as other players in order to be competitive. This makes the game boring and therefore unsustainable.) To convince the executives at Konami and Upper Deck that a new third format can be viable in sanctioned tournaments, an open championship event will be organized featuring the new format.

Phase 2: Format Revolution(In effect since July 4, 2006)
On July 4, 2006, Phase 2 of Project R launched a revolutionary new format for Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game. This format will herald the destruction of the “cookie-cutter” and bring balance to the metagame. The purpose of Project R will be understood more clearly now than ever before as players trying out the format realize the powerful consequences that will result from the success of Project R. So print out flyers about Project R and pass them out at every appropriate location. Flood the online Yu-Gi-Oh! chat rooms, message boards, and forums with news about the revolution. Place ads wherever you can. Get creative and have fun with this. The more publicity that Project R gets the better the odds of its success. Project R needs you.

Testing has now begun for possible changes for the format in the October update. (The October update will be used in the Phase 3 tournament.) Changes will definitely include adding “Giant Rat” and “Dark Mimic LV 1” to the Semi-Limited Card List. Changes may include making Forbidden Cards usable by fulfilling special conditions in Deck construction and de-restricting the number of copies of Fusion Monsters in the Fusion Deck. (Back to 3 copies per Fusion Deck.) In addition, a new way to play Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game called “Shadow Dice” has been added to the site.
